An inspect to two alternative school in the Netherlands. 2012年夏ユトレヒト大学修了時に提出したまとめのメール [教育/実践]

About Jenaplanschool "De Nieuwe Kring"

In this time, I paid attention 3 point. 
First is design.
I felt strong that design makes our life design since I came to the Netherlands. I wanted to know about relationship between school design to education.

Second is actual scale such as buildings, play grounds, how many teachers, students, and stuffs.
I want to confirm how environment influence us.

Third is observation to classroom.
I heard that the curriculum of Jenaplanschool is flexible and rhythmical, and then students are concentrating.

I was surprised at the wide scale. This is like country side school in Japan. Even though adults walks around the space and into the school, they can feel comfortable. Its buildings are thought deeply for comfortable space to all people. Inside is through about everything that function and colorful especially bright color, except strong color like strong red and pink and so on. In addition, the all class room has big window. They can get the sun shine or good brightness from out side. For that reason, class room is bright and get open feeling. These design is adapted everywhere.

The scale of members 15 primary class and 1 pre school class. One class has about 20 to 25 students, total is about 300 to 400 students. Teachers and stuffs are about 33. I think this scale was similar regular school. If I integrate some information, this number of student in the class room is the best because if the number is few, they can not make groups, if the students are more, teacher can not control every student especially in case that include some special needs student.

Third, classroom is controlled for each teacher. I watched 8 to 9 grade class which learned world orientation. At first, they made a circle and then teacher lectured about how to do presentation. Although they are different ages, they could help each other. They learned same topic but their tasks is different. Then how did they do their different tasks? The secret was in their textbook. It had good idea that contents were separated like sentence of black letter is for 8 grade students, blue letter is for 9 grades, green one is for extra tasks for high level students. This school had a lot of ideas as well as, I felt that teachers are hard worker because their concentration to students is real and their power of observation is very strong. If a student don't care about their atmosphere, teacher showed them firm attitude and indicated to the student. At the moment, I felt their ties and rules of class room were certain. The important things are leader ship as leader who pay attention to everything and still atmosphere, it is not as teacher. They teachers need ability as meditator for all student can be active.






About Montessori school "De eilanden"

Third is observation to classroom.
I heard that the montessori education is; the role of the teachers is to help what pupils learn, I think this role is like supporter.

To begin with, the scale of this school is not big, it is compact sides like an island that  is floating the sea. It‘s just suits for the name of school “De eilanden”. In that space, many pupils moved freely because the inside of building had a lot of idea.There are some hidden space, for example, under the stare is like living, it has two little down stares and many cushions. The pupils can do everything such as to study, to play something, and to take a rest and so on. A lobby is the separate place that is behind the main stare in 2nd floor. The pupils can be everywhere that the pupils choose in their free time.

The scale of this school is 25 classes 300 pupils 11 teachers and stuffs. There are many pupils if it compares the number of pupils with the scale of building, however we don’t feel cramped because of the design that adopt plenty of the sun shine from big and many windows as well as, an entrance hall built in wellhole style. The environment and atmosphere are quite important because they make us comfortable. I think all good things begin at comfortable feeling. And then they have communal playground that is similar size to school across a road.

Three pupils who can speak very well and so courteous introduced us inside the school include class room which during a lesson time. I was surprised at the overwhelming quantity of material for education such as, mathematics, language, social study etc. they almost covered all subject and different levels. They use one of them every time and moved hand and head and heart.The atitude of the teachers is a few and calm. And then, every class room had a chronological table on the wall. Almost education materials can be reached by pupils. In the class, teacher had a big ball, and it through to the pupils and conversate about some thema. At that time, surely pupils replace the their concentration. And then I didn’t see the attitude which is strict to the teachers 


In conclusion, the important things are design about space and class room because design decide environment, environment makes atmosphere, atmosphere brings good direction, good direction is birth to good motivation, good motivation creates each ideal human.
