An inspect to two alternative school in the Netherlands.


About Jenaplanschool "De Nieuwe Kring"

In this time, I paid attention 3 point.
First is design.
I felt strong that design makes our life design since I came to the Netherlands. I wanted to know about relationship between school design to education.

Second is actual scale such as buildings, play grounds, how many teachers, students, and stuffs.
I want to confirm how environment influence us.

Third is observation to classroom.
I heard that the curriculum of Jenaplanschool is flexible and rhythmical, and then students are concentrating.

I was surprised at the wide scale. This is like country side school in Japan. Even though adults walks around the space and into the school, they can feel comfortable. Its buildings are thought deeply for comfortable space to all people. Inside is through about everything that function and colorful especially bright color, except strong color like strong red and pink and so on. In addition, the all class room has big window. They can get the sun shine or good brightness from out side. For that reason, class room is bright and get open feeling. These design is adapted everywhere.

The scale of members 15 primary class and 1 pre school class. One class has about 20 to 25 students, total is about 300 to 400 students. Teachers and stuffs are about 33. I think this scale was similar regular school. If I integrate some information, this number of student in the class room is the best because if the number is few, they can not make groups, if the students are more, teacher can not control every student especially in case that include some special needs student.

Third, classroom is controlled for each teacher. I watched 8 to 9 grade class which learned world orientation. At first, they made a circle and then teacher lectured about how to do presentation. Although they are different ages, they could help each other. They learned same topic but their tasks is different. Then how did they do their different tasks? The secret was in their textbook. It had good idea that contents were separated like sentence of black letter is for 8 grade students, blue letter is for 9 grades, green one is for extra tasks for high level students. This school had a lot of ideas as well as, I felt that teachers are hard worker because their concentration to students is real and their power of observation is very strong. If a student don't care about their atmosphere, teacher showed them firm attitude and indicated to the student. At the moment, I felt their ties and rules of class room were certain. The important things are leader ship as leader who pay attention to everything and still atmosphere, it is not as teacher. They teachers need ability as meditator for all student can be active.






About Montessori school "De eilanden"

In this time, I paid attention 3 point.

I heard that the montessori education is; the role of the teachers is to help what pupils learn, I think this role is like supporter.

To begin with, the scale of this school is not big, it is compact sides like an island that is floating the sea. It‘s just suits for the name of school “De eilanden”. In that space, many pupils moved freely because the inside of building had a lot of idea.There are some hidden space, for example, under the stare is like living, it has two little down stares and many cushions. The pupils can do everything such as to study, to play something, and to take a rest and so on. A lobby is the separate place that is behind the main stare in 2nd floor. The pupils can be everywhere that the pupils choose in their free time.

The scale of this school is 25 classes 300 pupils 11 teachers and stuffs. There are many pupils if it compares the number of pupils with the scale of building, however we don’t feel cramped because of the design that adopt plenty of the sun shine from big and many windows as well as, an entrance hall built in wellhole style. The environment and atmosphere are quite important because they make us comfortable. I think all good things begin at comfortable feeling. And then they have communal playground that is similar size to school across a road.

Three pupils who can speak very well and so courteous introduced us inside the school include class room which during a lesson time. I was surprised at the overwhelming quantity of material for education such as, mathematics, language, social study etc. they almost covered all subject and different levels. They use one of them every time and moved hand and head and heart.The atitude of the teachers is a few and calm. And then, every class room had a chronological table on the wall. Almost education materials can be reached by pupils. In the class, teacher had a big ball, and it through to the pupils and conversate about some thema. At that time, surely pupils replace the their concentration. And then I didn’t see the attitude which is strict to the teachers


In conclusion, the important things are design about space and class room because design decide environment, environment makes atmosphere, atmosphere brings good direction, good direction is birth to good motivation, good motivation creates each ideal human.

Start Alternative Education course 2012 in Utrecht. [振り返り/思考]

From today, alternative education course began.
This class has my four friends who we have already met each other last week and new greek friends and Austrian friends and new Dutch friend.

1st class was guidance and introducing each other.
In this time, our teacher is a teacher of Jenaplan school. Because I am interested in Jenaplan education strongly, I could concentlate spontaneously. We could learn about Jena, Dalton, Montessori, and freinet education.

Our first discussion was;"Are these education system's assignments general or typical?"
This separation was surely difficult but our team has Japanese, Dutch and Mexican, we could good suggestion. For instance, I picked cooperation up between school and local people and parents. In my opinion, this thing is general but other opinion is also there. Actually we could discuss a lot of things.

After class, I went to the library in university.This place was so nice because they have plenty of books about alternative education althougf almost in Dutch. I felt storongly that I have to improve skills of Dutch.



Below part doesn't matter about school.

Since we came back our apartment, we had some problems although I can not write down here.
And I could have experience that I ate Indonesian spycy foods. It was very hot but good taste for me.
In the night, we education classmate prepared something for tomorrow.
I can not say now.


Anyway, it was also good day.

The first weekend in Utrecht [振り返り/思考]

I had finished our first course about " Inclusive Education".
About this thing, I will describe next time.

On Friday night, my room mate's friends came back to our apartment with new german friend.
It was quite short time with them but they were so funny and nice personalities that's why we could share nice time. I felt strong I want to improve my listening skill.

On Saturday, I and Yoshimi who is my classmate and Japanese went to the library in the Utrecht university. Because it was good weather, we enjoyed going around the city before library. although it needed long time, it was very comfortable because of a lot of natures. We were tired and hungry and then went to the restaurant in the forest near the river. It was the best of location and good lunch in addition, many dutch people also came there and their smile and atmosphere was so nice. I felt people who live in this country are happy and satisfy for this country. It can be something what we Japanese learn.
The library was closed, and we changed our plan. We went to the market near the station and then went to the book store. Fortunately, because a library of Utrecht city was neighbor this book store, we could searched many books about education.

SME [振り返り/思考]

Time flies really quickly. I have already spent two months in SME. During the time, I have had various experience and friends. We, all batch mates are over 20, consist of Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese and Chinese. What have I gotten in SME, and What experience did we have? I will try to describe this.

SME school has brought me confidence which I can speak English. It is important because if we want to contact to some foreigner, we have to speak English and listen carefully to English in most case. Therefore we have only one choice which our ability can improve. In my case, fortunately I could have close batch mates and good friends and comfortable teachers as well as guards and staff members. In addition, we could find real enjoyment in English. In our country, we can not realize the pleasure in English or any languages.

The pleasure of another language is in communication because if we who has another culture understand each other, we can get information more and can cultivate friendships. We feel enjoyment wherever we share some information with each other especially foreigner to foreigner because we can't share usually for another language. That had a speciality.

We could have plenty of experience for English, such as, travel, shopping, party, festival and so on. Lately, I want to appreciate my teachers especially my class; Elyn, Neths, Philbert, Cha-Cha, Christy, Mennie, Mark, Glen, and my mother teacher Rolyn. Of course other teachers is also. They supported us hard. I am really glad to see them from the bottom of herat. It has given us a lot of memories and wisdom which I can't count, that is SME.

光陰矢の如し。時が過ぎるのは本当にあっという間だ。私はフィリピンにある英語学校SMEで二ヶ月を費やした。その日々の中で様々な経験をし、また友を得ることに成功した。同級生は20人を超え、日本人、韓国人、台湾人、そして中国人。この期間私はSMEで何を得たのか、またどのような経験を持ったのか書き綴ってみたい。

SMEは私に英語を話すことが出来るという自信をもたらした。それは重要なことで、なぜならば私たちは外国人と接触をはかるときに英語を話し、よく聞かなければならないからだ。そのために私たちは自らの英語に関する能力を高めるというただ一つの選択肢を迫られることになる。私の場合は幸運にも親しく雰囲気の良い同級生たち、小気味良い友人達、愉快痛快で優れた恩師たちに恵まれた。またセキュリティースタッフやマネージャーたちも良い人であり、そしてそれらの中から私たちは英語の本当の喜びを見つけることが出来た。私たちの国では英語やその他外国語の教育の中から喜びを見いだすことは難しいと言っても過言ではないかもしれない。なぜならば私たちが外国語の中にその必然性を見い出すことは難しいからだ。一般生活において私たちは外国語を必要としない。そこから意欲が上昇することは難しく、それによって英語への関心は低下、しゃべることが出来ないという漠然とした不安からそれはますます下降の一途をたどる。

他外国語を学ぶの喜びはそのコミュニケーションにある。もし文化の異なる私たちがお互いに理解し合えば、そこから多くの情報を得ることが出来るとともに、その友情を深めることも出来るからだ。私たちはお互いにいくらかの情報を共有することができればどこでもその楽しさを感じる。なぜならば、異なる言語での情報のシェアは通常不可能であるからだ。そこには特別な感情が潜んでいる。

今回英語のおかげでとても多くの経験をすることが出来た。仲間との旅行、ショッピング、パーティーやフェスティバルなど。もちろん私たちの共有言語は英語であった。最後になるが大変お世話になった恩師の方々にお礼を述べたい。特にクラスを持ってくれた先生方、エリン、ネス、フィルバート、チャチャ、クリスティー、ミニー、マーク、グレン、そして個人的なアシスタントの先生であるロリン。もちろんその他の方々にもお礼を申し上げたい。彼らは心から熱心に私たちをサポートしてくれた。私は心の底から彼らに出会えたことを嬉しく思う。数えきれないほどの思い出と知恵を与えてくれた学校、それはSMEだった。

10.4-13.4 2012 [振り返り/思考]

10.4 Tue
Finally I completed all arrangement for airplane tickts and schools.
I chose the cheepest tickets this time.
First, it is Jetstar which I go to Philippine,that costs 35.000 yen.
secondly, it is the notorious China airline which I go to Netherlands,that costs 100.000 yen.
Of course each ticket is a two-way.After I only pray the God safety of journey.


By the way, I could notice most important things.This is about my education's philosophy.

Actually I had already instructed which based these idea.

I have three considerations.

First
I deepened about alternative educations.
Today, I read many books.I think I'll write down my note on Facebook.
I'll also learn alternative educations in the world especially except Netherlands and Japan.

Second
I knew recently management of Starbacks through TV program.
I was imppressed that management phylosophy of the president, and that is linked my confidence.
The management pleasuring Employees and customer can go world business scene.

Third
I understood it is good that English conversation's practice is talking talking talking,and if we have to learn something, the preparing is very impossible.Although it is ordinary.

Although I am only sitting on my sofa in my room, it is wonderful that I can make new friends.



Tonight I had come back Tokorozawa which I live in since last week.So quiet than Tokyo.Only rainy sound rings my heart.I'm in 静。Duties in my heart melt into a deeply place and they are reborn to my new cell.Recycle, that may be it.


Circulating,
Circulating is the very thing which I am always pursuing.

Rhythm.
Rhythm is linked to all thing, and sing a liberation of spirits.


There is the world there.We will know more.

9.4.2012 My Starting Point [振り返り/思考]

I began today with not good dream,but I will change it to the better future.
We want to think to change bad things into the next thinking and new idea.

By the way,I am going to go to Netherlands in this sommer because I will study alternative educations at sommer school of Utrecht university.
Alternative education will be needed next situations on occasion for education.Although I will write about them hereafter, they have a lot of method for education in many cases.
In the first place, I must perfectly master English and Dutch, because gain the idea all over the world and Netherlands certainly has many method.Netherlands is community which is consist of many minorities.Deteals are also next occasion.

Therefore I am going to study English for two months in Philippine.
Why I choise Philippine, intoroduce next time.

2012.4 第一週目 [振り返り/思考]

31.3.2012 Sat.
took part in practice which I had belonged to the brassband for five years.Playing is Holidays of Hope town and The Folklore for band.Although there was also spanish marchI forgot its titel.
After practice,we have gone to the Izakaya [Japanese style bar],and then were having a fun time.
I would go back home, last train was finishing.I have walked from neighbor town to my home town.

1.4 Sun.
studyed about Jena plan in Tokorozawa's Starbacks.I descovered a new videos for Jena plan on the Youtube,so I shared on this Facebook.I learned about what we need to study for making a creative class.

2.4 Mon.
I thought about my next plan all day and then decided a thing.

3.4 Tue.
I went to shopping to buy present for my master.My master is the oldest conductor in Japan,the age is 86.I had learned conducuting for five years.I would present my master the best anything,so I visited my favorite store Ginza Natsuno [speciality store dealing in chopssticks].
My choise was really excellent chopsticks which it makes of hard wood from Brazil.I felt fate because my master was musician who spreaded Brazilian music into Japan.
Finally I gave given the chopsticks to my master,and leaved the class.
I heard after this that my master and his wife were delight at the present.

4.4 Wed.
talked about my next and future planning to my family.
It was preasure for me that they agreed with my opinion.

5.4 Thu.
visited my grandmother's house in Asakusa for to concentrate to studying.

6.4 Fri.
Studying and thinking.Evening I walked around Asakusa.cherry blossoms were very beautiful,and Tokyo Sky Tree was good looking.
I remembered that my country is Asakusa.

That day I took part in cherry blossom viewing which my college friends planed it in Inokasira park.
So fantastish.Thank you my friends.
This day's evening I and my friends Kumi two took part in an event for Flower arrangement and creativitiy in Netherelands in Ebisu.We learned more and found the most place.It was fantastish place which we did workshop, flower shop kusakanmuri.
I want to recomend everyone.I am thanking for good meeting.

▼What is Jenaplan?
From the past century to this time, nowadays we are standing at a turning point. How can we make our life better socially? I would like to suggest an effective curriculum and model/plan for education and that is the Jenaplan.

Jenaplan is one of the education programs in the Netherlands such as education plan for Montessori, Freinet, Dalton, Schteiner, and so on, like alternative school. Its purpose is to make better social and for that realization, it has various topics. I will explain each topic in detailed after. At this moment, I would like to introduce some topics. Class as living room , Multiage class, Circle conversation, World orientation, Rhythmical curriculum, Quiet space, Pedagogical situation, Authenticity, Team working, Cooperative attitude with parents. In this essay, I will describe the plan mentioned above moreover there are other 20 principles for educational program.

This Jenaplan is from Germany. Peter Petersen (1884-1952) made this education plan. But this plan finished in Germany when Petersen has died, incidentally, it was reimported from the Netherlands to Germany. Afterwards, Suus Freudenthal-Lutter (1908-1986) who is dutch scholar, discovered Jenaplan and then she brought it to her country the Netherlands. I will describe also history and backgrounds after this moment because the social condition is the most important fact.

Jenaplan aims for true democratic social. True democratic social means that everyone is equal but unique, we should understand everyone's differences and treat each other fairly and equally, in other words, we can say also that each one of us has citizenship that's one kind of the initiatives for our social life. This is not revolution. It's a little creation from school. We can begin from a little seed and raise up to certain flower. Jenaplan is one of the concrete ideal plan for education and social. Lastly, I have to add one thing that Jenaplan is efficient and sufficient to our way of life as well as to help us grow our well-being.





▼Class as living room

Jenaplan school’s class is thought of a living room. In this chapter, I will describe how the class room is arranged as well as why the class must be living room.

Everyone has to have some responsibilities to their environment. Therefore each of them has to discuss the fair distribution of the tasks and the rights inside the classroom and decides it, since Jenaplan is based on equality, the teacher serves as their group leader and facilitator.

The instructional materials in the classroom are indispensable for every students. The classroom should provide a circle space (or a space for making circle) for a group discussion or some activities. Moreover, the classroom should have a working table for them, a clerical table for group leader, relaxing space, pc space to study and for searching information, bulletin board for some announcements and space where they can expose and practice their creativity like arts and science, there is a big and wide table for classroom activities where every students is involved. The furniture in the class such as student’s desks and chairs etc. should be used functional materials for that students can move/use more easily because they all need to make circle space for conversation always. It is expected that some chairs or tables will be found anywhere due to different activities and circle work, but it can easily be settled down.

Jenaplan school’s designs are based on pedagogical situation which Peter Petersen suggested strongly. School is living place that’s why teachers have to offer the best environment which all student can feel safe and each of them can find his/her own space for students. Although it is not only this, safe space for living is the most important for learning. Jenaplan school embodies a little ideal community in their own school.





▼Multiage class

A class organization of Jenaplan school is basically a multiage group. Indeed it might be difficult to realize in many countries, however I would like to tell the validity of multiage class in this essay.

The advantage of multiage class is the best way to grow up their citizenship for social in the future. I will pick up some reasons which Petersen suggested. To start off with, they have beginners, intermediate and advanced total three grades students in a class. Thus, every students can undergo all these stages as they grow up until they graduate, because this organization consists of different ages with different abilities. For that reason, students can learn with each other and take three kinds of places like learning, working, and coaching. Moreover even if someone always gets “excels” and make a go of something, they have to try to compete to get the same place with other persons who have better ability. Secondly, it is effective way to know, appreciate and value every student’s differences as well as to cut off our discrimination and bad notion between abled and slow-learner students, and that’s why, personality of child and real leadership is born. Thirdly, every year a number of a class change about one-third. One-third is the best number because they are guaranteed that traditional good habits and cultivated educational values keep living. Lastly, students can live better in social, consequently, school prepares same environment as social.

In conclusion, multiage class organization is certainly better for democratic social more than same-aged class. As a matter of fact, Jenaplan has been stablished and applied to Germany and Netherlands, yet it is very hard to build like this organization in many countries. However, the important thing is these essence and thinking. so finding the better method is to know the countries' background,that is, they should apply and practice their own way in their country.
The essences are we are all different and each of us is unique besides we can respect each other. the implication of this program is, we should do something for the betterment of our children's learning as well as to help them nurture and prepare for their future.





▼Circle conversation


Circle conversation is a core program in many topics of Jenaplan, because it is organized in rhythmic curriculum as one important factor. The rhythmic curriculum is consist of 4 factors which are circle conversation, working, playing, and celebration. In this chapter, I will discuss why they make a circle and do a conversation there.

Circle conversation caters some different queries and student's concerns as well as establish equality. It changes the negative notion between the knowledgeable person and the unknown one like teacher and students. These embody the interactive relationship for learning. In fact,making a circle like conducting a meeting or conference that is open to any ages either adults or children has been known in the Netherlands. Actually, it seems to feel that circle dialogue is better than conversation.
Why does it seem like dialogue? A dialogue has two categories. First, it helps students ask and answer questions. Then second one, it guides students to search the essence of the things around them. What are the differences of conversation, debate, discuss , and dialogue? We should always consider of its problem.
Why does it seem like circle? It describes and explains that every students can learn by doing with real people and not just only the materials provided. In addition, it also brings them to socialize others with different personalities, skills, ages, and races. People in the circle can exchange ideas and share their innermost feeling and concern with each other freely. This form of education discourage the common prejudice of people towards the different skills and students level of comprehension.

For those reasons, they can talk more easily because their classmates are already prepared for listening. However, we want to have some notifications to do circle conversation,that is, teacher as facilitator has to explain the rules as well as to suggest some grounds to make a dialogue and do a role play within a circle. If you can pay attention to all, that’s wonderful thing. Every student learns something by doing or by experience. The circle conversation can be applied either before the class starts or during the lecture or when the activities is finished.




▼World orientation

There is no classification between science and social study in Jenaplan, and then people use world orientation in the form of comprehensive curriculum. Thinking, teaching materials, way of teaching, and curriculum over world orientation have developed in the Netherlands extensively.

World orientation has “seven areas of experience” and “time” besides “space” as well as these are treated (dealt with) in a circulation. “Seven areas of experience” are: (1) making and using (work, consumption, sustainable possibility) (2) environment and topography (inhabiting of humans, plants, and animals, global universal environment as living house), (3) circulated a year(the dates in a year, some celebrations, the year of school), (4) work skills(construction, machine and materials, big system, raw materials and energy, how to use skills etc.), (5) communication(with other person, nature, besides with foreigner in nature etc.), (6) living together(belong a social, for living together, sharing the world etc.) and lastly my life(I, people, adults etc.)
In addition, “time” means to measure time in nature, use time, consider time from philosophical point of view, circulative time, continued time like a line etc. Moreover, “space” is: be conscious of space, recognize value of space and think how to use it, make development thought after due consideration, how to measure space study, space and nature, consider space from philosophical point of view and so on.
School decides eight or nine themes things in a year and treats same thema for all school. Man picks up these themas or areas but the goal of learning takes up concrete things and experiences in order to adapt each aged groups of students. For instance, in the case of “inhabiting of animals and plants” on “environment and topography”, low grade’s groups pick up a thema of “winter wild birds”, middle groups are “a branch of winter trees” and high ones treat “a hibernant animals” in the term.

World orientation is able to interweave other basic subjects like mathematics, national language. Moreover it can be derived from other thema such as, music, drama, learning of maps, searching on pc, learning of English and more. In addition, the class conducts a presentation that aims active learning activities as well as provides a place that is conducive to learning to encourage student's participation with different levels, and ages. Owing to that,students discover and understand the significance of school life and are able to learn things comprehensively.
Basically, the learning takes place when a group leader makes a link to students by acting as a facilitator, in which he listens to, caters and gathers all the questions to help students find the answers and surmount the problems the students have been facing to make a proceed learning on the plan which is connected to the theme they tackle.
(Basically, group leader relates students while acts some roles to processes as facilitator that group leader arranges their own questions and has a talk with everyone for a process to find an answer as well as make proceed learning on a plan on the assumption that question which is based on children to objects of thema is a starting point for learning.)

World orientation has profound and important factor to learn things more effectively in a circle or in a group because it increases the students’ participation when everyone has given a chance to make an observation and share it in the circle where interactions are visible. In a nutshell, every students’ skills and knowledge will be trained and the character of every individuals will be molded and nourished. That is indeed the significance of world orientation.
(World orientation has also important factor as talking with each other in a circle through class, little group, own observation as well as other children’s observation, in addition, spread knowledge, difference of each other, and give a place for learning cooperation.)



▼Rhythmical curriculum

On the Jenaplan school, it doesn’t make a curriculum divided subjects. Basically, it consists of 4 matters which are circle conversation, working, playing, and celebration and then we circulate their activities for curriculum. Why does Jenaplan implement this system? I’d like to say my opinion.

As far as I’m concerned, I have a conviction that rhythmical curriculum can serve real study to students. It means that we have to learn how to learn in our life and should think about relation between “I” and the world, therefore education has a role to connect children and the world. It goes without saying that all things in their life are certainly learning experience for children. According to my previous article, “circle conversation” draws out pupils’ latent question, based on their questions, students proceed their own assignments on “work”. Moreover, its learning changes into experience through “playing”. In addition, through their experiences which obtain 3 factors of learning make them hold an event as make a generalization and assessment for learning.
For instance, if a student has to carry up a heavy stone, it will be impossible for her or him to do without any tools or equipments like a lever. Then pupils think “how to carry up the stone?” Teacher does not give an answer, but facilitates and serves them in a circle conversation. When they have an idea about different way how to move a stone, teacher suggests “Let’s try to do it”. When they succeed bring up the stone, many sow bugs are running away to hide somewhere. Teacher can make exercises for some subjects such as national language, mathematics, history, science, music, P.E., drama, and art. For example, national language “How to write a sow bug? Can we make some story with a sow bug”, mathematics “How many sou bugs was there? Besides they do something as playing, in addition, when their activities deepened, they consult with each other or teacher suggest an event such as presentation like drama or music or study and so on, for all students and teachers and also parents in the school. Naturally its planning is succeeded by students, teacher just gives an environment to do an event.

In conclusion, rhythmical curriculum can keep student’s concentration and create their motivation as well as connect “I” and this world. If they discover that learning in their own school connect this world and share the information, moreover they are fun, they can obtain independence. It is important for human who lives in the social.



▼Quiet Space

Can we really have enough time for thinking in the bustling world? Thinking time is one of the important factors in our life. In this essay, I would like to tell about quiet environment to study.

We should have time to meditate in our living time. Meditation helps to bring us relaxation, arrangement and exploration of though, and creativity as well. The Jenaplan school emphasizes to increases more chances and opportunities for meditation that is one of the essential tools effective learning. In other words, the school provides time that is called blok hour for self studying time to gauge how much they have learned something and review it more with tranquility of the place. In addition, this is able to relate two sides of the same coin with a securing place where children can frankly speak up with each other on their own initiative if it adopts time for group work and circle conversation. As I wrote article before, quiet study time is also one of the matters cycling rhythmical curriculum. It is important that all activities for learning connect to the world, this is why we need time to think ourselves about various things for connecting our small familiar world and factors which consist of our world.
Even if Jenaplan school has attractive and efficient curriculums, it has no meaning if children don’t have interest and initiative idea. Thinking gives birth to questions besides curiosity. Moreover, they can also concentrate on their own study.

There are several questions that have infinite answers, so the school should encompass an environmental that is quiet and conducive to learning as well as respect the students’ time to think and make decisions on their own without hassle and pressure. It is different for children to answer the things which they can’t understand quickly or to solve the problems with hearing from their teacher or friends. A quiet place helps students to explore and widen their imagination and provide time to ponder to construct and create a reasonable and intelligent idea from numerous questions that have unresolved and infinite answers.

2nd day in Philippines (Manila)2012 [English/game]

My second day is filled up for many memories. I met a new friend in a youth hostel which I stayed. He is Weera from Tailand, and I was amazed at his occupation. He is a monk of Buddism in his country. Although I understand about this later, he is one of the kind men and then I've done to walk around the city with him. The first place was central park(Rizal park). It was big park and stood huge bronze statue and church and so on.
Philippines is very hot country, from that reason our energy melted down soon. To the next place we used a train. Train around the Manilla is one of the major vehicles and always has many people. Of course Gepney is also.

Lunch is in chicken restaurant, it was maybe famous chain store in Philippines. It was really good but that soup is very salty. We thought about next action there. After lunch, during I waited for Weera, I played ballon with a little child. I felt a bit children all over the world are same maybe. It was first time that I relate a child in abroad. Finally we decided to go around the Manila and Makaty cities by train.

This trip was so hard because of my first abroad, hot, hard traffic, and many people, his situation is almost similar.However we could feel fun everything. We've gone to shopping mall at the last stop by train, afterwards we've gone to his hotel. His talk was very fun and deep. We had really great time. After I had a shower, I went to the airport by taxi. The taxi driver's technic and heart was really good therefore I was comfortable. I paid for 200 pesos include his tip.

After I was check-in of my flight, suddenly I felt so bad. I had a fever in the airplane but this was maybe from my father. Although our airplain was going up, my feeling was going down hardly. There is only one happy thing. It was that my friend Jun who we met in our flight before that day and his family are also same flight accidentally.

At the midnight, I finally arrived at my school SME by a car with Kevin who is Korean manager in SME.

Personal Changes Resulting from Living Overseas [English/game]

There is a proverb in English that says, "Travel is broadin" meaning that diverse experiences contribute to the growth of an individual. This is true even of a short guided tour to a foreign country but much more so when living and working in a different culuture.

On a guided tour, the traveler is usually surrounded by people from the same country, speaking the same language. This is like carrying one's own culuture along to a foreign country. It restricts the experience of observing the country from otherside. Even so, the unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells and tastes enrich the traveler's experience and are, in a limited sense, broadening.

But a person who lives and works in a different society and culture is exposed daily to the attitudes and ways of thinking of that country's residents, as well as the different costumes and unfamiliar foods. There are all filtered througf the cultural attitudes that the traveler carries within.

This is confusing at first until one realizes that many more things are culturally determined than one imagines. "Right" and "Wrong" begin to lose their absolute meanings and change to "suitable" or "unsuitable".

People living in the same society need, to some extent, to share same values otherwise moral anarchy results and people's behavior deteriorates until it threatens the society as a whole.

Having one's ideas or basic values challenged is disturbing. But for the traveler who is able to survive in an alien environment, it leads to a careful examination of one's own social values and the social values one is exposed ro. WHat often results is a more throughtful framework of personal values, and this is, indeed, broadening.
